On 27 July, 1997, Harry stored a copy of Elphias Doge's Daily Prophet obituary of Albus Dumbledore in his copy of the first volume of these books, throwing the remainder of the newspaper in the rubbish pile.

- This book seems to serve as a direct counterpoint to Defensive Magical Theory, which contained no practical information and referred to counter-jinxes as merely being a name which people give their jinxes when they want to make them sound more acceptable.
