The Post Office tower was commissioned by the General Post Office (GPO). Its primary purpose was to support the microwave aerials then used to carry telecommunications traffic from London to the rest of the country.

Harry Potter and Ronald Weasley once flew over this Tower using the Flying Ford Anglia where some Muggles had spotted them and it was later reported and published in the Evening Prophet.
