Connect appliances with electrical sockets

George: "Mad-Eye Moody? Isn't he that nutter -"
Mrs. Weasley: "Your father thinks very highly of Mad-Eye Moody."
Fred: "Yeah, well, Dad collects plugs, doesn't he? Birds of a feather..."
Fred mentions Arthur Weasley's obsession with plugs.[src]

Plugs, or more specifically, electrical plugs, are a part of Muggle technology used in channeling electricity to appliances. They were an obsession for wizard Arthur Weasley. To the dismay of some of his family and friends, and the amusement of others, he collected them, read about them, and tried to understand how they worked.

During Harry Potter's visit to The Burrow in the summer holidays of 1992, Mr. Weasley bombarded him with questions about aspects of Muggle life, such as plugs and Muggle Mail.[1]

Behind the scenes

  • For readers in the U.S., it may help to understand this fascination, if you know that electrical plugs and sockets are not as standardised in the U.K. So appliances may be sold without the plug; plugs are purchased separately and attached to match the socket in the Muggle's home. The so-called sockets that the plugs plug into are called receptacles.
