Pear (tree)

The pear (genus Pyrus) is any of several tree species of the genus Pyrus.[1] The wood of these trees is used to make wands.[2]

Several species of pear are valued by humans for their edible fruit (also known as pears), but the fruit of other species is small, hard, and astringent.[1]

The golden-toned wood of pear produces wands of splendid magical powers. Possessors of pear wands are, in the experience of the learned wandmaker Garrick Ollivander, usually popular and well-respected and he never knew of single instance where a pear wand has been discovered in the possession of a Dark witch or wizard.[2]

Pear wands are among the most resilient, and it is noted that they may still present a remarkable appearance of newness, even after many years of hard use.[2]

The English word "pear" is probably from Common West Germanic pera, probably a loanword of Vulgar Latin pira, the plural of pirum, akin to Greek ἄπιος apios (from Mycenaean ápisos), which is likely of Semitic origin. The place name Perry and Pharisoulopol can indicate the historical presence of pear trees. The term "pyriform" is sometimes used to describe something which is "pear-shaped".[1]
