A parachute is a cloth canopy which fills with air, therefore allowing the person attached to it to descend slowly when they falling at an altitude.

In 1994, Draco Malfoy said that it was a shame that Harry Potter's Firebolt didn't come with a parachute because he would need it in case he encountered another Dementor (Harry's previous encounter with a Dementor resulted in him falling off of his broomstick from high above the ground).[1]

Also in 1994, during the Quidditch World Cup, Bulgarian Seeker Viktor Krum and Irish Seeker Aidan Lynch were described as looking as though they had jumped from planes without parachutes as they dove on their broomsticks.[2]
