Owl to Opera Glasses[1] (Strigiforma)[1] was a transforming spell that could be used to transform an owl into a pair of opera glasses.[1][2]
History
It was covered in Intermediate Transfiguration, a book studying transfiguration; a series of diagrams helped readers understand the spell.[2]
During the 1986–1987 school year at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, Professor Minerva McGonagall taught her third-years how to perform this particular transforming spell in Transfiguration class.[1]
Hermione Granger read about this transforming spell while studying for her Ordinary Wizarding Level examinations in May of 1996 while discussing Professor Hagrid's request that they train his giant brother Grawp how to talk.[2]
Known practitioners
Etymology
From strigis, the genitive form of strix, the Latin word referring to the Screech owl;[3] from forma, Latin for form or appearance. Also, in biology,[4] Strigiformes is the name of the taxonomic order that includes all owl species.[5]
Behind the scenes
- The incantation is a misnomer, as it is indicative of an owl, but the spell transforms things into opera glasses, and not into owls. For example, Lapifors turns the target into a rabbit and Avifors the target into a bird. This might be a mistake from Harry Potter: Hogwarts Mystery developers, where the spell appears.
Appearances
- Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix (First mentioned)
- Harry Potter: Hogwarts Mystery (First appearance) (First identified as Owl to Opera Glasses)
