The Opal necklace was a cursed Dark object, bought at Borgin and Burkes by Draco Malfoy in 1996.
During the first Hogsmeade trip of the 1996-1997 school year, Madam Rosmerta (who was under an Imperius Curse from Draco Malfoy) cast an Imperius Curse on Katie Bell, and ordered her to take a package containing the opal bracelet back to Hogwarts, and to give it to Dumbledore.
