Behind the scenes

  • Nintendo was one of the various media companies that submitted bids to purchase the rights to adapt the Harry Potter series into non-book media in 1998. Among the ideas submitted with their pitch were a third-person adventure title, a game based on the fictional sport of Quidditch (a similar game would eventually be made: Harry Potter: Quidditch World Cup), and video game adaptations of the books for their Nintendo 64, Game Boy Advance, and Gamecube consoles. J. K. Rowling declined Nintendo's bid, however, due to disagreement over character art (Nintendo wanted to used a Japanese manga-like style, at odds with Rowling's vision to keep the series British) and a desire to have the series adapted by a company with greater resources who would be willing to create films as well as video games. The rights to adapt the series were eventually bought by Warner Bros.[2]
