"Less than a year later a harassed-looking Fudge had appeared out of thin air in the cabinet room to inform the Prime Minister that there had been a spot of bother at the Kwidditch (or that was what it had sounded like) World Cup and that several Muggles had been "involved", but that the Prime Minister was not to worry, the fact that You-Know-Who's Mark had been seen again meant nothing; Fudge was sure it was an isolated incident, and the Muggle Liaison Office was dealing with all memory modifications as they spoke."
— Description[src]

The Muggle Liaison Office was a division of the Department of Magical Accidents and Catastrophes responsible for wizard-Muggle relations[1]

Function[]

Given the general lack of Muggle awareness of the wizarding world in accordance with the International Statute of Wizarding Secrecy of 1692, the Muggle Liaison Office was shown to have fulfilled its duties in a very one-sided manner. It was heavily implied that the Muggle Liaison Office only got involved in moderately serious magical-Muggle collisions, since whereas the Office of Misinformation became involved in only the very worst ones,[2] such as the cover-up of the 'hurricane' in the West Country in 1996 where a lot of people were killed,[1] the Muggle Liaison Office was stated to have been involved in the fairly high-profile case of covering up the 'isolated incident' that took place during the 1994 Quidditch World Cup,[1] yet were notably absent from the more trivial case of the Ministry's reversal of accidental magic by Harry Potter the year before, after he accidentally inflated his aunt Marjorie Dursley.[3]

Moreover, the office also seemingly operated as something of a regulatory body responsible for risk-assessment and validating Ministry operations that might have repercussions for wizard-Muggle relations. Any hidden and protected habitats for magical creatures in the Muggle world had to be registered with and approved by the Muggle Liaison Office before the appropriate spells could be cast upon it, and if the necessary paperwork did not go through or were held back at this office for whatever reason, as was the case of a fairy forest in the 2010s, the anti-Muggle security around it would not be maintained by the Ministry.[4]

History[]

Celestina Warbeck's father was a "minor functionary" in the Muggle Liaison Office in around the 1910s.[5]

In the summer of 1994, after the Death Eater incident at Roberts's campsite, the Muggle Liaison Office was tasked with memory modifications.[1]

Myra Curio worked in the Muggle Liason Office, providing expert analysis to Mathilda Grimblehawk and her partner, of the Beast Division, during their investigation of magical beast attacks.[6]

Behind the scenes[]

  • "Muggle Liasion" indicates that they may interact with Muggles who have witnessed magic-related incidents.
  • They may also deal with those who have legitimate reason to know about the wizarding world, such as family members of Muggle-born Hogwarts students.
