"Moly is a powerful plant that can be eaten to counteract enchantments. It is a black-stemmed plant with white flowers."
Phyllida Spore, One Thousand Magical Herbs and Fungi[src]

Moly was a powerful plant that could be eaten to counteract enchantments,[1] and were also used as a potion ingredient, such as in the brewing of the Wiggenweld Potion.[3] Moly plants were easily recognised by their distinctive black stems and white flowers.[1]

History[]

"Good day, students. I trust you've trusted all brought your gloves and clippers? Today you'll be meeting an unassuming little flower with surprisingly potent effects. It may not look like much, but the plant known as Moly is one to remember. Allow me to educate you on the qualities of this unique plant."
Professor Sprout to her sixth-year Herbology students[src]

During the 1989–1990 school year at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, Professor Pomona Sprout taught her sixth-year Herbology students about how to properly handle and cultivate this plant.[2]

During the 1995–1996 school year at Hogwarts, Professor Severus Snape had his fifth-year students collect five Moly plants from the castle grounds as Potions homework, along with Mandrakes and other ingredients. Harry Potter, Hermione Granger and Ron Weasley helped Ernie Macmillan with his homework so he could have time to join them in Dumbledore's Army.[4]
