- "I've used mistletoe berries for potions before! I'm glad I didn't eat them."
- — Penny Haywood in Herbology[src]
The berry of the mistletoe is small, white, and waxy,[4] and also poisonous, thus making it unsafe to eat.[2]
It was used as an ingredient in potions, including the Antidote to Common Poisons and the Forgetfulness Potion.[1]
History[]
The Holiday Blancmange Severus Snape recalled enjoying in his youth used mistletoe berries as ingredients.[3]
Professor Pomona Sprout taught sixth-year Herbology students in the 1989–1990 school year at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry how to tend mistletoe bushes and their berries.[2]
Behind the scenes[]
- The use of mistletoe berries as an ingredient in the Antidote to Common Poisons is ironic: the non-berry parts of the mistletoe plant are extremely poisonous, causing intense stomach pain,[5] diarrhoea,[5] low pulse,[5] visual disturbances,[6] and convulsions[6] if eaten.
- However, the berries are considered "relatively non-toxic" if only a small amount are ingested, but can cause stomach upset when eaten in larger quantities.[6]
- Even more oddly, in Harry Potter: Hogwarts Mystery, Snape told Jacob's sibling that it's supposed to be good for one's health in small doses, as learned from Potions class.[3]
- However, the berries are considered "relatively non-toxic" if only a small amount are ingested, but can cause stomach upset when eaten in larger quantities.[6]
