The wand of Minerva McGonagall is 16 1/2 and contains an unknown core. The wood is also unknown, though it is possible that it may be made of ivy wood, as this wood falls under her date of birth in the Celtic Tree Calendar McGonagall has been able to perform very powerful and advanced magic with this wand, such as in the Battle of Hogwarts.

Characters mcGonagall

Minerva McGonagall casting a spell against the Death Eaters during the Battle of Hogwarts in 1998.

Like most wizards and witches in Great Britain, she likely purchased it at the age of eleven before beginning her education at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry in 1937.

Behind the scenes

  • In the film adaptations, the wand is sixteen and a half inches with a glass piece protruding out of the elaborate handle.
  • In the film adaptions the wand is one of the few that has had a consistent design throughout all the films in the series.
  • If one is to look closely at the glass cabinet on Mr. Ollivander's counter in the film adaptation of Harry Potter and the Philosopher's (Sorceror's) Stone, a wand that looks exactly like Minerva McGonagall's wand is visible. This suggests that even in the first two films the wands were made of resin.
  • The glass tip on the wand is highly breakable and in order not to snap it off, Dame Maggie Smith uses long sweeping gestures.
  • The film version of Minerva's wand is significantly larger than its book counterpart, about 7 inches longer.
