The surname Mina has several different origins. As Portuguese surname, it derives from an ethnic name for a person who came from or had travelled to the place historically known in Portuguese as the Costa da Mina (roughly meaning "Coast of the Mine", a name deriving from the trade of gold and slaves from the factories therein established during the Portuguese Age of Discovery), a region of the Gulf of Guinea in West Africa corresponding to modern-day Ghana, Togo, Benin and Nigeria. As a Spanish surname, it is a name for someone from a place called Mina or La Mina, from the Spanish mina, "mine." As a Greek surname, it is a variant form of Minas, which derives from the Greek personal name Menas, itself derived from the Ancient Egyptian name Mena (which belonged to the Pharaoh Mena, also known as Menes).
