Mesopotamia (or Meſopotamia) is a toponym for the area of the TigrisEuphrates river system, largely corresponding to modern-day Iraq, north-eastern Syria, south-eastern Turkey and southwestern Iran. Mesopotamia is widely considered to be the cradle of civilisation.

Abraham was in Mesopotamia when God asked him to sacrifice his son Isaac, in a test of faith.[1]

Etymology

This name derives from the Ancient Greek meso-, meaning between or middle, and potamos, river, the whole describing the area between and around the Tigris and Euphrates.
