Mesopotamia (or Meſopotamia) is a toponym for the area of the Tigris–Euphrates river system, largely corresponding to modern-day Iraq, northeastern Syria, southeastern Turkey and southwestern Iran. Mesopotamia is widely considered to be the cradle of civilisation.

Abraham was in Mesopotamia when God asked him to sacrifice his son, Isaac, in a test of faith.[1]

This name derives from the Ancient Greek meso-, meaning between or middle, and potamos, river, the whole describing the area between and around the Tigris and Euphrates.
