"Instead, he found a clear inch of dust and her note of farewell, explaining what she had done."
Albus Dumbledore to Harry Potter[src]

This note was written by Merope Gaunt to her father Marvolo Gaunt and brother Morfin Gaunt, in 1925, after the two men were imprisoned in Azkaban.[1]

When Marvolo returned from his six months sentence, he expected his daughter waiting for his return with a hot meal on the table. Instead, he found the note accompanying a clear inch of dust. Reading the note stating what she did and bidding the family farewell, led Marvolo to never mentioned her existence again, and the shock may have contributed to his early death (or that he never learned to feed himself).[1]

Whether Marvolo destroyed or kept the note is unknown, but when Morfin returned two and a half years after Marvolo (who has died by then), Morfin learned his sister's desertion and what she did after, either from the note or the rumours from the locals.[2]

Contents

It's likely that one of the contents included Merope saying farewell to her father and brother and explaining that she married the Muggle, Tom Riddle Snr.[2]
