Mrs. Gaunt was the wife of Marvolo Gaunt, and the mother of Morfin Gaunt and Merope Gaunt and the mother-in-law of Tom Riddle Sr.. Thus, she is also the maternal grandmother of Lord Voldemort. Very little is known about her, but she is likely a pure-blood witch, as Marvolo, a fanatic about blood purity, would presumably never marry and have children with anyone with a "lesser" blood status. Given the Gaunts' tendency to marry cousins in order to maintain "purity" and their ability to speak Parseltongue, she may have been a close relative of her husband.
In the mid-1920s, it does not appear that Mrs. Gaunt lived in the Gaunt Shack in Little Hangleton with her family, as her daughter did the cooking and the house was said to be abandoned once Marvolo and Morfin were sent to Azkaban and Merope ran off with Tom Riddle Sr.. Thus, Mrs. Gaunt may have died before these events.
