Merlin was a wizard during the time of King Arthur, little is known of his past. Arguably one of the most famous wizards of all time. During the medieval era, he was part of the court of King Arthur and assisted him during his reign, it is unknown if Merlin alerted Arthur or anybody to his magical powers, although it is likely. In his time he was an expert user of the modern-day existing Charms and had the nickname or alias of the Prince of Enchanters, Merlin believed that wizards should help muggles and live peacefully with them. He created the award of the Order of Merlin which currently commemorate those who have done something such as performing a great deed at personal risk or for contributions to the wizarding world, although originay it was an Organisation to promote Muggle Rights.
The popular Wizarding exclamations, "Merlin's Beard!", and the more unusual "Merlin's Pants!", also "Merlin's baggy Y fronts!" are in reference to him.
Albus Dumbledore, an extraordinarily talented and powerful wizard resembled Merlin in many ways, such as the iconic long beard and prodigious magical skill. Both were "Muggle sympathisers" although Merlin's belief in the pure-blood elitism is unknown but most likely was the same as Dumbledore's.
