- "You'll be starting small, just matches into needles and that sort of thing—"
- — Percy Weasley[src]
This spell (incantation unknown) was used to transform a match into a needle.[1] It was one of the simplest transfiguration spells.[2]
Nature and teaching
Due to its being the simplest spell of transfiguration, this was the first spell taught in transfiguration class (after they take many complicated notes).[1]
It seemed, however, that even beginning students had trouble with it; by the end of their first lesson, only Hermione Granger had made a substantial improvement to her match, and Professor McGonagall proudly showed the class how it had turned silver and was rather pointy.[1] She later gave the class "a pile of homework", presumably on the subject of this spell.[1]
Morag tried to light her match, and was scolded by Professor McGonagall.[3]
