- "You'll be starting small, just matches into needles and that sort of thing—"
- — Percy Weasley[src]
This spell was used to transform a match into a needle[1]. It is one of the simplest transfiguration spells[2].
Nature and teaching
Due to its being the simplest spell of transfiguration, this is the first spell taught in transfiguration class (after they take many complicated notes)[1].
It seems, however, that even beginning students have trouble with it; by the end of their first lesson, only Hermione Granger had made a substantial improvement to her match, and Professor McGonagall proudly showed the class how it had turned silver and was rather pointy[1]. She later gave the class "a pile of homework", presumably on the subject of this spell[1].
Practitioners
Behind the scenes
- Morag tried to light her match, and was scolded by Professor McGonagall[3]
