Mary Macdonald was a student attending Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry at the same time as Lily Evans and Severus Snape. She was a Gryffindor, and was supposedly attacked with Dark Magic by Mulciber while at school.

She alerted Lily to the fact that Snape was intending to spend the night outside the entrance to the Gryffindor common room to apologise for accidentally calling her a "Mudblood."

Etymology

The name "Mary" is the usual English form of Maria, which was the Latin form of the New Testament Greek names Μαριαμ (Mariam) and Μαρια (Maria) - the spellings are interchangeable - which were from the Hebrew name מִרְיָם (Miryam). The meaning is not known for certain, but there are several theories including "sea of bitterness," "rebelliousness," and "wished for child." However it was most likely originally an Egyptian name, perhaps derived in part from mry ("beloved") or mr ("love").

Behind the scenes

It is possible that she was Muggle-born and that this was the reason she was harmed by Mulciber. However if she was indeed related to Magnus Macdonald, she could not have been so as he was a wizard.
It is also possible that Mary and her family were blood traitors, and she was attacked by Mulciber for that reason.
