Mary Macdonald was a student attending Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry at the same time as Lily Evans and Severus Snape. She was a Gryffindor, and was supposedly attacked with Dark Magic by Mulciber while at school.

She alerted Lily to the fact that Snape was intending to spend the night outside the entrance to the Gryffindor common room to apologise for accidentally calling her a "Mudblood". It is possible that she was Muggle-born and that this was the reason she was harmed by Mulciber. This theory is further supported by the fact that she was a Gryffindor student, as this house is known for having a large quantity of Muggle-born students, relative to other houses. However if she was indeed related to Magnus Macdonald she could not have been so as he was a wizard.

Etymology

The name "Mary" is the usual English form of Maria, which was the Latin form of the New Testament Greek names Μαριαμ (Mariam) and Μαρια (Maria) - the spellings are interchangeable - which were from the Hebrew name מִרְיָם (Miryam). The meaning is not known for certain, but there are several theories including "sea of bitterness", "rebelliousness", and "wished for child". However it was most likely originally an Egyptian name, perhaps derived in part from mry "beloved" or mr "love".
