The marmite was a moderate-sized squid-like magical creature. Described as a "cross between a dust mite and squid," it had a transparent, bioluminescent body and long trailing tentacles.[1] These tentacles could reach up to ten feet in young specimens, and presumably became even longer in adults.[1]

Young marmites were apparently unable to feed themselves and had to be bottlefed when kept in captivity.[1]

Newt Scamander had a young marmite in his suitcase during his visit to New York in 1926.[2]
