The Major Investigation Department was a large office that served as the base of operation for the Investigative Team, a specially-assigned task force charged with investigating crimes related to the violation of the International Confederation of Wizards' Statute of Secrecy and putting the security risk in question to rest by whatever means necessary.
Description
Found deep within the headquarters of the Magical Congress of the United States of America, the office of the Major Investigation Department was said to stand in stark contrast of the cramped, airless, windowless basement room in which the Wand Permit Office could be found. Large and very official looking, its walls were made of Gothic paneling and ornate golden columns, and lined with wooden cabinets whose drawers were filled with past investigation files and subject to stringent magical security measures.[1]
Beside detailed maps of both the city of New York and the United States of America featuring the various crime hotspots and areas of conjuration that were dressed onto a large meeting table surrounded by wooden chairs around which the Investigative Team would gather for briefings and discuss ongoing investigations, alongside paperweights, ledgers and books of magical law such as one regarding Rappaport's Law, the table were also often overflowing with reams of paperwork, such as crime reports, finger print sheets and spell recordings of the witches and wizards on MACUSA's list of Most Wanted. In addition to a large meeting table, the office held various tools and equipment designed to track magical activity, as well as a bulletin board featuring a number of wanted posters the Investigative Team searched for.
Usage
Members of the department, collectively called for the Investigative Team, is consists of the Director of Magical Security and the highest-level Aurors, with the input of the President of the Magical Congress of the United States of America.[2][3] They gathered in said office located deep within the Magical Congress of the United States of America in which high-level MACUSA employees met to discuss ongoing threats to the safety of the wizarding community of America and resolve issues of magical security and the security of the magical citizenry.
History
In 1926, the Investigative Team had a meeting in the Major Investigation Department that included the participation of President Seraphina Picquery and highest Aurors and the Director of Magical Security, Percival Graves.[2][3]
On 6 December 1926, President Seraphina Picquery and Percival Graves (actually Gellert Grindelwald in disguise) held a meeting in this department to discuss the strange events taking place in New York.[1]
On 7 December 1926, President Picquery met in the Major Investigation Department with top Aurors to track the destruction caused by the Obscurus of Credence Barebone.[4]
