"Of the Horcrux, wickedest of magical inventions, we shall not speak nor give direction —"
— Excerpt of the introduction of Magick Moste Evile[src]

Magick Moste Evile was a Dark Arts reference book, written in the early Middle Ages by Godelot. This book had the characteristic of letting out a ghostly wail when slammed shut.[1]

History

A copy of Magick Moste Evile

A copy of the book was kept in the Restricted Section of the library of Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. Hermione Granger checked it out in early 1997 in an attempt to gain information on Horcruxes, only to be thoroughly annoyed by its lack of information. That particular copy let out "a ghostly wail" when Hermione slammed it shut in irritation.[1]

During the Calamity in the late 2010s or early 2020s, a Calamity Investigator working for the Statute of Secrecy Task Force realised that the Calamity was stealing copies of this book at an alarming rate. In an attempt to understand why, the investigator read the book from cover to cover. The experience chilled their blood, but did give them a better understanding of the Dark Arts.[3]

In 2020, Hermione Granger had a copy of this along with many other dangerous or banned books on her bookshelves in her office as British Minister for Magic.[2]

Godelot wrote down this collection of dangerous spells with the help of his wand (according to Godelot in his notebook) which he claims is made of Elder (Deathly Hallows believers consider this to be the Elder Wand). This body of work greatly advanced the study of Dark Magic. Horcruxes, however, receive only a brief mention in the book, which does not detail what they really are, their nature considered so vile that even a book on the Dark Arts was unwilling to speak of them.[1]
