- "The Wand-Lighting Charm is simple, but requires concentration. Take care not to accidentally set your wand alight as damage of this kind can be permanent. If in any doubt about your abilities you would do better to buy yourself a magic lantern."
- — Miranda Goshawk[src]
A magic lantern was a magical lantern that was enchanted to produce light, without the need of being powered by fuel or electricity.[2]
History[]
Prior to the discovery of the Wand-Lighting Charm, these sorts of lanterns, as well as inferior types of light-creation spells, were used by wizards to provide light. Even in more modern times, magic lanterns still saw use. Miranda Goshawk recommended in the Book of Spells that wizards that do not feel confident in their spell-casting abilities invest in one, as a poorly performed Wand-Lighting Charm can damage the wand.[2]
Automatically igniting lanterns dotted the roads of the Highlands during the 1890s, giving light to wayfarers at nighttime.[1]
They also see use in situations where wizards providing light would be impractical, such as when the Weasley family used a set of floating golden lanterns to illuminate William Weasley's wedding.[3]
