Magic is Might

"Magic is Might" was the motto of the the Ministry of Magic while it was under the control of Lord Voldemort in 1997 and 1998. It represented the idea that wizards and witches are inherently superior to Muggles, and, as such, are entitled to rule over them.[1][2]

This phrase was engraved at the base of a statue that was installed in the Atrium of the Ministry of Magic Headquarters after Voldemort took power. Replacing the Fountain of Magical Brethren, the statue featured a gigantic witch and wizard seated atop thrones made up of tiny, naked, stupid- and ugly-looking Muggles.[1]

Muggles in their "rightful" place

Hermione Granger compared "Magic is Might" to "For the Greater Good", the motto Gellert Grindelwald used to justify his actions in the European Wizarding Revolution.[2]

Behind the scenes

  • Similar slogans are also used in other prominent works of fiction such as the party slogans in the dystopian novel Nineteen Eighty-Four by George Orwell: "War is Peace", "Freedom is Slavery", and "Ignorance is Strength".
  • In the film adaptation of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, the Muggles are clothed.
