"She was quite an extraordinary witch, but she did like to experiment...and one day, one of her spells went badly wrong. I was nine."
Luna Lovegood discussing her mother with Harry Potter[src]

Mrs. Lovegood (d. circa 1989-1990) was a witch who was married to Xenophilius Lovegood, the editor of The Quibbler, and with him had one child, Luna Lovegood. She died around 1989 or 1990, when Luna was nine.

Biography

Luna

Her daughter, Luna.

According to her daughter, Mrs. Lovegood was an extraordinary witch who liked to experiment with spells. One day in 1990, one of these experiments went wrong, killing her in front of Luna (and possibly her father), who was subsequently able to see Thestrals. Luna told Harry Potter that she continued to feel sad about her mother's death from time to time and believed that she would see her again after death.[3]

Xenophilius Lovegood 1

Xenophilius Lovegood, her husband.

Luna had a picture of her and her mother hugging in her room at home. In the picture, she was described as looking very much like her daughter. Many years after her death, Mrs. Lovegood would gain grandchildren in Lorcan and Lysander Scamander, the sons of Luna and Rolf Scamander.[4]

Notes and references

  1. In Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix (film), Luna says she was nine when her mother died; Luna was born in 1981 and, due to her being 17 in the battle of Hogwarts - as there were no complaints of her fighting - her birthdate falls between these two dates, meaning Mrs Lovegood had to have died between these dates too.
  2. "In Ch. 4 of Harry Potter and the Half-blood Prince, Horace Slughorn states that family members are often Sorted into the same House. This may indicate that Mrs Lovegood was Sorted into Ravenclaw, as Luna was Sorted into Ravenclaw. However, there are exceptions.
