- "There is a room in the Department of Mysteries that is kept locked at all times. It contains a force that is at once more wonderful and more terrible than death, than human intelligence, than the forces of nature. It is also, perhaps, the most mysterious of the many subjects for study that reside there. It is the power held within that room that you possess in such quantities and which Voldemort has not at all."
- —Albus Dumbledore talking about the Love Chamber [src]
The Love Chamber room is behind a door that remains locked at all times and which cannot be unlocked by Alohomora or magical unlocking penknives. In the centre is a magnificent some twenty feet wide. Stone benches run all around the room and descend in steep steps toward a raised hill in the centre of the garden. There is said to be an ancient, large fountain standing on this hill.
The fountain is believed to spurt an enormous deposit of Amortentia, the most powerful love potion in existence. It is believed that someone who drinks the Amortentia is forever obsessive for the objects of their affections in the world of love. Some people, such as Harry Potter, got their means of opening the chamber door melted upon contact with the lock.
In 1996, part of a battle of the Second Wizarding War was thought to have been fought in the Love Chamber after Harry Potter, Hermione Granger, Ron and Ginny Weasley, Neville Longbottom, and Luna Lovegood arrived in the Department of Mysteries in search of Sirius Black. The six Dumbledore's Army members, however, actually tried to enter the chamber upon their arrival, but the door refused to open.
