Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, commonly known in the United States of America as Lou Gehrig's disease, is a disorder that causes progressive weakness and muscle atrophy, to the point where the infected is completely immobile. Stephen Hawking, author of A Brief History of Time, suffered from this disease, and spent the last twenty years prior to the book's publication trapped in a wheelchair due to it.
