Little Whinging is a town in the English county of Surrey. Little Whinging is the home of Harry Potter, the Dursleys, and Arabella Figg.^[1] Dementors attacked Harry Potter and his cousin here in 1995.^[2]

Known streets

Streets in this town are Wisteria Walk, Magnolia Crescent, Magnolia Road, and Privet Drive (where the Dursley's house is located at No. 4).^[2]

Etymology

"Whinging" is another word for whining, an activity that Dudley Dursley and Vernon Dudley particularly enjoy.^[3]

Since Rubeus Hagrid farewelled Harry Potter from London Paddington after taking him shopping in 1991 at Diagon Alley, Harry Potter most likely took a commuter rail service bound for Reading (the Muggle train company in 1991 was Network SouthEast); thus, it can be inferred that Little Whinging is in the north part of Surrey, north of Staines, and that Harry got off the train at Iver or Langley, which is in Buckinghamshire on the border with Surrey, a few miles northwest of London Heathrow Airport. However, this makes no sense, since that area has no suburban-type residential houses, and at the beginning of Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince (film), Harry is seen at Surbiton station, within Greater London on the suburban rail lines to Hampton Court, Woking and Guildford, showing that he lived in this general area, which again makes no sense, since Surbiton and the Iver area are very far apart.
In the films, Little Whinging was filmed in Martins Heron in Berkshire, which is served by suburban rail on the London Waterloo - Reading route (not the route from Paddington)
