Little Whinging is a town in the English county of Surrey. Little Whinging is the home of Harry Potter, the Dursleys, and Arabella Figg^[1]. Dementors attacked Harry Potter and his cousin here in 1995^[2].

Streets in this town are Wisteria Walk, Magnolia Crescent, Magnolia Road, and Privet Drive (where the Dursleys' house is located at #4).

Etymology

"Whinging" is another spelling of whining, an activity Dudley Dursley particularly enjoys.

Little Whinging's location within Surrey

Since Rubeus Hagrid farewelled Harry Potter from London Paddington after taking him shopping at Diagon Alley, Harry Potter must have taken a rail service provided by First Great Western; thus, it can be inferred that Little Whinging is in the northern part of Surrey, north of Staines (since the First Great Western services do not serve Surrey, except the Reading - Gatwick Airport line, which does not serve Paddington), somewhere between Hayes & Harlington and Slough (West Drayton, Iver or Langley); thus, Harry must have taken a London commuter rail service bound for Reading and Oxford or Reading only (most probably Reading only as it was evening peak when trains to Oxford are fast West Drayton - Slough), as the regional services only call at Slough for boarding (Intercity services do not stop there at all), and Hayes & Harlington, West Drayton, Iver and Langley are solely served by commuter trains. If Little Whinging were elsewhere in Surrey, it would have been more efficient, using Muggle public transport, to leave London by South West Trains commuter rail from London Waterloo, or Southern commuter rail from London Victoria (in real life however, SWT would have been more efficient to the northern tip of Surrey as well, since the London suburban rail route to Windsor & Eton Riverside has a station in Wraysbury, just on the Surrey - Berkshire border). However, FGW did not exist in 1991, so it should be British Rail, most likely the sub-company of Network SouthEast.
