The Liberal Party was one of the major political parties of the Muggle government of the United Kingdom. By July of 1996, Sir Menzies was leader of the party. However, in that month, he retired his position, citing the media's obsession with his age and other trivial concepts as his reasoning for this action. Major candidates running for his place as leader included Chris Huhne, the party's environment spokesman, and Nick Clegg, the party's home affairs spokesman.
Behind the scenes
- The reference to the "Liberal Party" on the prop version of The Guardian is incorrect, as the Liberal Party merged with the Social Democratic Party in 1988 to form the current Liberal Democrats. A Liberal Party currently exists in the United Kingdom, but it is not the one that Menzies, Huhne, and Clegg belong to.
