"The 'Levitation' spell is one of the earliest recorded spells of the wizarding world, with its origins in ancient England."
— History[src]

The Levitation Spell (Levioso) was a charm that levitated objects. However, it did not also allow one to move said objects (unlike a similar spell).[1][2][3] It could also be used to levitate people in duelling.[2] Levitated Diricawls could not disappear and reappear as usual.[4]

History[]

"Essential Tip # 1: If you choose to have a meal at a table that as been levitated (as many beginning students do), it is wise to also levitate one's chair."
— Tips on casting, Cast-a-Spell Kit[src]

The Levitation Spell was one of the earliest recorded spells of the wizarding world, having been created in ancient England.[1]

During the 1890s, the spell was used in duelling. It was taught in fifth-year Defence Against the Dark Arts classes by Professor Hecat at Hogwarts.[2]

Known uses[]

Caster(s) Date Note
Eleazar Fig 1 September 1890 Used it on a Guardian in Vault 12 of Gringotts Wizarding Bank.[5]
Dinah Hecat 2 September 1890 Cast it on her Dinah Hecat's Hebridean Black skeleton skull after it was knocked from its perch by Sebastian Sallow.[2]
Cast it on Leander Prewett to demonstrate its effectiveness in duelling.[2]
Unidentified 19th-century Hogwarts student Used the spell after Professor Hecat taught it to them.[2]

Etymology[]

Levioso probably derives from Latin levo, meaning to "raise, lift up", or levis, meaning light (of weight).[6][7]

Behind the scenes[]

  • Wingardium Leviosa is described in Hogwarts Legacy to be a more advanced levitation charm. It differs from Levioso in that it can also control the object's movement, while Levioso cannot.[3]
  • The effects of this spell are curiously similar to those of the Hover Charm.
  • In Cast-a-Spell handbook on the Harry Potter Official Site, it states that casting the Levitation Spell requires caster to tap the target with their wand.[1] However, Hogwarts Legacy depicts it as able to work without making physical contact with its target.[2]
