"Ferte in noctem animam meam
Illustrent stellae viam meam
Aspectu illo glorior
Dum capit nox diem

Cantate vitae canticum
Sine dolore actae
Dicite eis quos amabam
Me numquam obliturum
"
— Excerpt of the lyrics of In Noctem, a wizarding song with some Latin verses.[src]

Latin is an Italic language originally spoken in Ancient Rome.[1] Although often considered a dead language by Muggles, wizards continue to use this dead language in their everyday life.[2] Latin has a strong influence in both wizarding culture and arts (the wizarding song In Noctem, for instance, features four verses, in both English and Latin, with the Latin lyrics meaning the same as the English ones)[3] and rhetorics (Librarian Irma Pince used the Latin phrase "Labore omnia vincit" while tutoring Hogwarts students).[4]

Wizards use a kind of mutation of the Latin language when designing new spells.[5]
