Kwikspell

A Kwikspell letter

"Feel out of step in the world of modern magic?
Find yourself making excuses not to perform simple spells?
Ever been taunted for your woeful wandwork?
There is an answer!
"
— Kwikspell letter[src]

Kwikspell was a correspondence course in beginner's magic run by the Kwikspell Company. It was designed to help adult witches and wizards brush up on their magical skills.[1]

Lesson one of this course taught the student the correct way to hold their wand as well as the Skurge Charm.[2] It also came with a book.

Kwikspell's introduction letter included apparent testimonials from Madam Z. Nettles and Warlock D.J. Prod, who were said to have had poor magical skills but been helped by the course.[1] It isn't known if these testimonials were genuine. However, regardless of the course's effectiveness, squibs like Argus Filch and Arabella Figg can get no results as they have no magical power.[3]

History[]

In late October 1992, Argus Filch received a course package from them, having possibly signed up believing that the course would help him perform magic. Filch brought Harry Potter to his office, intending to write Harry a punishment report for dripping mud from his dirty Quidditch robes onto the castle floor. In the middle of writing it, Peeves the Poltergeist dropped a Vanishing Cabinet, distracting Filch. While he was gone, Harry, curious, read the introduction letter. When Filch came back, he was so embarrassed by the realisation that Harry had seen it that he ordered Harry out of his office without punishment. When Harry told his friends about this, they deduced that Filch was likely a squib, much to their amusement.[1]

Behind the scenes[]

  • The definition for this course at the Scholastic Harry Potter Glossary incorrectly states that it is a course for squibs. This, however, is incorrect, as the course will work for those who actually have magic, but squibs actually have no magical powers. Its definition for "Squib," however, correctly defines them as those who are born to a magical family, but without magical power.
