Kenny Markham was a Gryffindor student who began attending Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry in 1990.[1]
As a lover of wizard's chess, he collected chess pieces, and traded his extra ones with other students for Gobstones or Chocolate Frog Cards. He could usually be found in the Transfiguration Classroom during the 1996–1997 school year.

Since there were only five Gryffindor boys in Harry's year and all of their names are known, in order to have still been at Hogwarts during the 1996-1997 term, he must have been in the year above Harry.
