[edit] Education at Hogwarts

[edit] Early Years 1990-1993

Katie Bell started her education at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry in 1990. During the Welcoming Feast Katie would be sorted into the house of Gryffindor head of which was Minerva McGonagall. In her second year at Hogwarts the famous wizard, Harry Potter would arrive, 11 years after he had defeated Lord Voldemort, Harry was sorted into Gryffindor also. In this year Katie joined the Gryffindor Quidditch team and played the position of Chaser, during her first ever Quidditch match she was hit in the back of the head by a Bludger but did not sustain any serious injury. In her third year at Hogwarts Katie and the others on the Quidditch team were lectured by captain Oliver Wood on their performance, and before any practise took place they had been removed from pitch by the Slytherin team. She would then be witness to Draco Malfoy calling Hermione Granger a mudblood, a term which shocked her.

Katie: "Strong and silent."

In Katie's fourth year, Captain Oliver Wood became more competetive, Gryffindor had not won the Quidditch Cup in over seven years and he wanted to break the losing streak. During practise Wood commented on his chasers playing "superbly". Gryffindor had originally planned to play Slytherin first, but due to bad weather faced the Hufflepuff Quidditch Team instead, captained under Cedric Diggory. When Oliver Wood spoke of the Hufflepuff Captain Cedric, Katie Angelina Johnson and Alicia Spinnet started giggling and commented on Cedric's good looks. The game itself did not go to well, all players struggled against the bad weather and found it hard keeping on their wet brooms. Harry, Gryffindors seeker had passed out in the presence of a Dementor and fell from his broom, leaving Cedric, Hufflepuffs seeker to catch the snitch, Gryffindor inevitabley lost the match. Katie and her team later played Ravenclaw and Katie scored the first goal and soon after Gryffindor were up by eighty points. Ravenclaw started to make a comeback but Harry caught the snitch, and Katie kissed Harry after the game.

In the final match of the season, against Slytherin the pressure was on as this was the deciding match. The game was full of brutal fouls and when Gryffindor was up by twenty points Montague had gripped Katie's hair and made her do a cartwheel in the air, Katie managed to recover and stay on her broom but as a result dropped the Quaffle she had been carrying. As a result, Madam Hooch awarded Katie a penalty and she scored. Later in the game, Katie scored the fith goal and then Harry caught the Snitch, winning the game. Gryffindor had won the cup and the whole team got together in the air for a group hug before flying down to the grounds to be carried back to the castle on their house mates shoulders.

[edit] Fith Year 1994-1995

In Katie's fith year, all Quidditch games had been cancelled due to the school hosting the Triwizard Tournament. When Harry Potter was selected at the fourth champion to qualify, alongside Cedric Diggory of Hufflepuff, Fleur Delacour of Beauxbatons Academy of Magic and Viktor Krum of Durmstrang Institute, Katie like all the Gryffindors was estatic.

Katie was excited that Harry could pay Hufflepuff back for losing against them in their previous year by beating Cedric, which Harry did but only because Cedric was murdered by Lord Voldemort duirng the last task. Harry had won the cup but noone expressed happiness, the school was full of grief over the death of Cedric Diggory. At the end of the school year, Albus Dumbledore held a memorial service to Diggory and he openly voiced the rise of evil and the start of the Second Wizarding War.

[edit] Sixth Year 1995-1996

Katie: "Thats imaginative, did you think of that or did Malfoy?"

In Katie's sixth year the Gryffindor Quidditch team would have a new captain, Angelina Johnson as Oliver Wood had graduated the year before. Angelina though new, was no less strict than Wood had been. During the school term, Hogwarts was under inspection from High Inquisitor Dolores Umbridge, who had a disliking for Harry Potter and put him in detention several times, disrupting the Gryffindors quidditch practise schedule. This year was the last of both Angelina and Alicia Spinnet so Katie wanted to do well in games. During practise, Ron Weasley passes the Quaffle to Katie rather quickly and causes her nose to bleed, Fred Weasley under the impression he could stop the nosebleed gave her a small purple something from his pocket (which turned out to be a Blood Blisterpod), but it increased the blood loss and the practise was cancelled and Katie was rushed to the Hospital Wing by Angelina. Later on in the year Hogwarts was under rebellion from both students and staff alike.

In an attempt to defy Dolores Umbridge Harry, with the help of Hermione set up an organisation called Dumbledore's Army, where students could practise how to defend themselves in a practical manor, Katie and her friends joined the D.A. and attended several meetings. Katie then had a run-in with Peeves, which resulted in him tipping a whole pot of ink over her head. In a match against Slytherin the Gryffindor team were being taunted by Malfoy and his crew due to the poor quality of play by Ron Weasley, the match resulted in Gryffindor winning by Harry's catch of the snitch, but even still the team had to be refrained from attacking the Slytherins when they started to insult the whole Weasley family. At the end of the year, Katie had to bid farewell to her close friends Angelina Johnson and Alicia Spinnet.

[edit] Seventh Year 1996-1997

In Katie's seventh and final year she was the only original member of the Quidditch team left alongside Harry. When Harry had to run Quidditch tryouts Katie told Harry that she did not wish him to favour her as she was an old player but to hold her in a fair trial and not put friendship first, which ironically he did with Ron Weasley. Katie managed to succeed in her trial and keep the position of chaser, working alongside new chasers Ginny Weasley and Demelza Robins.

Later on in the year whilst on a trip to Hogsmeade Katie was put under the Imperius Curse by the Three Broomsticks inkeeper, Madam Rosmerta. Katie was made to take a cursed opal necklace that she found inside the girls bathroom and was ordered to give it to Albus Dumbledore in a murder attempt. However, whilst arguing with her friend Leanne, the package was torn and Katie touched the necklace with her gloves. Fortunately as she only touched it with gloves on it only caused her terrible pain and not death. Katie was sent to St Mungo's Hospital for Magical Maladies and Injuries and spent some time there recovering. In her absence, Dean Thomas replaced her as chaser but Katie was strong enough to return for the final game against Ravenclaw and helped Gryffindor win the Quidditch Cup for the third time since she was on the team.

[edit] Battle of Hogwarts

"Your efforts are futile. You cannot fight me. I do not want to kill you. I have a great respect for the teachers of Hogwarts. I do not want to spill magical blood."
—Voldemort to all those preparing to fight him.[src]

Katie had graduated Hogwarts and had gone on to other things. In 1998, at the height of the Second Wizarding War Katie was contacted via her Dumbledore's Army coin by Neville Longbottom, requesting that past and present members of the D.A. return to Hogwarts to fight in the Battle of Hogwarts against Lord Voldemort and his Death Eater army. Katie returned to Hogwarts with Oliver Wood, Alicia Spinnet and Angelina Johnson and proved her loyalty and courage by fighting. The battle was called to a halt when Voldemort asked that the school merely turned Harry Potter over and he would stop fighting, Pansy Parkinson expressed interest in doing this but was alone and all students not belonging to Slytherin raised their wands at her. Harry eventually stood out of the crowd and faced Voldemort one-on-one, and defeated him again. Katie was not listed amongst the casualties of the battle and is presumed to have survived the battle and the war.

[edit] Etymology

Katie is derived from Katherine. Katherine is from the Greek name Αικατερινηm, from the name of the goddess HECATE. It could be related to Greek αικια (aikia) meaning "torture", which is relative as Katie was tortured during her Seventh Year.

[edit] Behind the scenes

  • Katie Bell was portrayed by Emily Dale for both Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone and Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets films. For Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince Dale has been replaced by new actress Georgina Leonidas.
  • In the sixth film, Katie and Leanne are seen in a Potions class with Harry Potter, but in the books, she´s one year above him, though this could be due to Horace Slughorn becoming the Potions master and requiring a lower grade then Severus Snape to take the N.E.W.T. potions class allowing Katie and Leanne to take it in their seventh years, when they might not have had the required Outstanding O.W.L.s to take Snape's classes their sixth year.
