This year's scorching summer became the subject of a health warning yesterday amid fears it will kill many people. The Met Office issued its first-ever Level 3 Heat-Health Alert after confirming that Britain is in the grip of a "major heatwave". This follows two days when temperatures rose above 90F in London and slightly less in the rest of the country.

In sharp contrast, fierce thunderstorms brought flash flooding and destruction to large areas from Manchester to London.
