[edit] History
[edit] Early Life
Unaware of his magical abilities, Justin was headed to the English public school Eton before receiving his letter of admission to Hogwarts.[1] The prestige of this school and his double-barrelled surname suggest that Justin comes from an affluent Muggle family. In 1991, he began attending Hogwarts.
[edit] Hogwarts Years
In his second year, Justin participated in the Dueling Club. When Harry Potter spoke Parseltongue at the club's first meeting, Justin believed that Harry was setting the snake on him. Thus, he initially believed the rumours that Harry was the Heir of Slytherin, rumoured to be releasing a monster from the Chamber of Secrets to attack Muggle-born students like himself. Justin's friends Ernie Macmillan and Hannah Abbott both believed it as well, though Hannah initially protested that Harry was "too nice". Ernie warned Justin to stay in his dormitories.
However, Justin soon became the third known victim of the basilisk. Because he saw it through Nearly Headless Nick, Justin was not killed, only petrified. He was revived at the end of the year and apologised to Harry for thinking that he was Slytherin's heir.[1]
In his fifth year, Justin joined Dumbledore's Army. During their practice of Expelliarmus Charm, Luna Lovegood managed to disarm him, but in doing so tangled him into his school robes. He was one of the D.A. members to come to Harry's aid against Draco Malfoy, Vincent Crabbe and Gregory Goyle when they attempted to ambush him while boarding the Hogwarts Express at the end of the year.[2]
[edit] Height of the Second Wizarding War
Given that Justin is Muggle-born, it is very likely that he endured hardship when Lord Voldemort took over the Ministry of Magic and persecuted Muggle-borns from late 1997 to mid-1998. Justin may have been sentenced to Azkaban for "stealing" magic by the Muggle-Born Registration Commission or pursued by Snatchers; alternatively, he may have stayed out of the wizarding world during the height of the war for his own safety or snuck into Hogwarts, like Colin Creevey. However, no mention of him is made by Harry during the Battle of Hogwarts.
[edit] Etymology
- The English given name Justin is derived from the Roman name Iustinus, which is derived from justus, meaning "just" in Latin. It was the name of at least eight saints.[3]
- A finch is a type of small bird.
