"The passageway leading to Nearly Headless Nick's party had been lined with candles, too, though the effect was far from cheerful: These were long, thin, jet-black tapers, all burning bright blue, casting a dim, ghostly light even over their own living faces."

Jet black candles[1] are a variety of candle used by ghosts. They burn dimmer light than normal candles.[2]

Jet black candles were used to decorate the room that Nicholas de Mimsy-Porpington's five-hundredth Deathday Party was held in, as well as the passageway leading towards it. The dungeon in question held a chandelier composed of a thousand such candles.[2]
