Jennifer Smith portrayed Lavender Brown in the film adaptation of Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, she replaced Lavender's former actress Kathleen Cauley who played her in Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets. Though Smith had a non-speaking role she appeared frequently in the film.
Smith was not asked to return for either of the following two films and in the sixth film, white-British actress Jessie Cave was recast as Lavender for Half-Blood Prince and has been cast again for Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows. Jessie Cave became the third actress and the first actress of a different racial-colour to play Lavender.
For several years there was confusion over who Jennifer Smith was as another black-British actress, Kandice Morris, played a notable Gryffindor female and for a long period it was believe she was Lavender. However it later was discovered she was a character made for the films called Kellah, much like the character Bem.
