This letter was written by Isobel McGonagall to her daughter Minerva, sometime between 1956 and 1981. It was a chatty letter of news from her hometown of Caithness, in which Isobel told her daughter that Dougal McGregor, a local Muggle that Minerva has fallen in love with, had married the daughter of a local farmer.[1]
This news came as a shock to Minerva, who still had feelings for McGregor, and the professor was found crying late that evening in her classroom by Albus Dumbledore, who offered her both comfort and wisdom thus setting the stage for the lasting friendship between the two colleagues.[1]
