The Inflating Charm[1][4] (Inflatus)[1][2] was a charm[1] (sometimes referred to as a jinx)[2] that inflated the target.[3]

History

In the late 19th century, an unidentified Hogwarts student cast the Inflating Charm on Dorraway. They received a Howler from their guardian after the incident.[5]

In the 1980s and early 1990s, students at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry would commonly use this spell against their opponent in the Duelling Club.[6]

In August 1993, Harry Potter accidentally used this charm on his aunt Marjorie Dursley, causing her to blow up like a balloon at 4 Privet Drive after she insulted his parents at dinner.[3]

Harry Potter, Ronald Weasley and Hermione Granger used this jinx on various creatures around the grounds of Hogwarts Castle throughout the 1994–1995 school year, under the authorisation of their Defence Against the Dark Arts teacher, Bartemius Crouch Junior (who was disguised as Alastor Moody at the time).[2]

Etymology

The prefix "inflate" derives from the English verb "to expand with oxygen".

The Inflating Charm as seen in Harry Potter: Puzzles & Spells

  • It is interesting that "Inflating Charm" was once an incorrect fanon name given to Inflatus, a jinx that originally appeared in the video game adaptation of Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, by editors of the Harry Potter Wiki, but the original version of Harry Potter: Magic Awakened identifies the spell Harry used on Marge Dursley, which originally appears in Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, as the same name, despite there having been no canonical confirmation that the spells are one and the same. Then, shortly after the "Inflating Charm" page was created and the link between the spells was pointed out on the wiki, the incantation of the Inflating Charm was revealed to be Inflatus in the 2021 Hallowe'en update of the game, finally confirming that they are the same spell. Therefore, it is a possibility that the developers of Harry Potter: Magic Awakened take inspiration from the wiki when creating game content, and in the process also including incorrect information, as with this spell's name.
    • Now that "Inflatus" is used as the incantation of the charm, it is possible that the term "Inflating Charm" will eventually cease to appear in the game, as other spells, unless specifically mentioned in other ways, are either identified by only their name or their incantation. But currently, Hermione Granger would still use "Inflating Charm" instead of "Inflatus" in duelling, which may be fixed in the future. The English beta version also uses both "Inflating Charm" and "Inflatus" to identify this spell.
