Ilvermorny robes are coloured blue and cranberry, and are fastened by a gold Gordian Knot. They were designed by Ilvermorny's two founders, Isolt Sayre and James Steward: Isolt chose the colour blue because she had wanted to be in Ravenclaw house if she had attended Hogwarts, and James chose cranberry because of his love for cranberry pie. The gold Gordian Knot is a reference to one of Isolt's prize possessions; a brooch that had belonged to her mother, and which Isolt had found in the ruins of the original Ilvermorny cottage.
The design of Ilvermorny's uniform apparently changed over the centuries: In the Sayre family portrait, Chadwick and Webster Boot are shown wearing identical blue robes with cranberry red trim. They are also shown wearing black waistcoasts and brown breeches underneath their robes. By contrast, Ilvermorny students visiting MACUSA headquarters in December 1926 were wearing robes in two separate, solid colours, rather than each uniform being the same for all students.
Behind the Scenes
- In North America, the Narragansett people of the Algonquian nation in the regions of New England (in which Massachusetts is included) appeared to be using cranberries in pemmican for food and dyes. Calling the red berries, sasemineash, the Narragansett people may have introduced cranberries to colonists in Massachusetts.
