"Is this all real? Or has this been happening inside my head?"
The topic of this article is of a real-life subject that has been mentioned "in-universe" in a canon source. The Harry Potter Wiki is written from the perspective that all information presented in canon is true (e.g., Hogwarts really existed), and, as such, details contained in this article may differ from real world facts. |

Ilfracombe is a seaside resort and civil parish in North Devon, England.[2]
History
Ilfracombe is most famous in the wizarding world for being the location of the Ilfracombe Incident in 1932, in which a Common Welsh Green dragon attacked a group of sunbathing Muggles.
Fortunately, a vacationing wizarding family by the name of Toke also happened to be present. They managed to subdue the dragon and removed the memories of the incident from all Muggles involved in the largest group of Memory Charms performed in the 20th century. However, despite their mass memory charming, some individuals managed to escape with their memories intact. This included a certain "Dodgy" Dirk who maintained for at least forty years, much to the obvious confusion of Muggles, that a "dirty great flying lizard" punctured his lilo.[1]
Behind the scenes
- Ilfracombe has been the site of several major fires throughout its history, suggesting that the Welsh Green attack may have been the cause of one of these or damage from it was recorded as fire damage. No known fire occurred in 1932 but this may be due to the Memory Charms.
- The name "Li-lo" was registered as a product trademark in the UK on 19 April 1944, making its use describing an incident in 1932 possibly anachronistic; however Dirk may have taken to calling it this after the term entered common use.
Appearances
- Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them (First mentioned)
- Harry Potter: Hogwarts Mystery (First appearance) (Appears on a Famous Wizard Card)
