Hypnosis was a term used to refer to a state of consciousness in which a person was apparently rendered incapable of voluntary action and highly susceptible to suggestion or control.[1][2]

The Circus Arcanus, a freak show that travelled internationally in the 1920s, included Borys the Brute, a "perfidious" hypnotist of whose "artful deception" the public were warned to be wary.[3]

An ad for a product or service related to self-hypnotism was printed in an issue of the Daily Prophet in 1995.[4]

Some magical creatures, like the Wampus cats, are also able to perform hypnotism.
