Mrs Lupin was the mother of Remus Lupin. Along with her husband, she worried that her son would not be able to attend Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, due to his lycanthropy, but Albus Dumbledore made a special provision for him.[1]
Remus initially explained his monthly absences to his friends at Hogwarts, the Marauders, by claiming that Mrs Lupin was sick and that he had to go home to visit her.[1]
Behind the scenes
- It is known that Remus Lupin was a half-blood, and, from this, it can be inferred that at least one of his parents was magical[2]. Mr Lupin was likely a wizard, as he had contact with Fenrir Greyback at one point[3], which can either imply that Mrs Lupin was a Muggle, or that one — or even both — of the Lupins were Muggle-born or half-bloods. However, Remus' statement that both of his parents "tried everything" to cure his lycanthropy[1] suggests Mrs Lupin may have been a witch, as a Muggle probably would not have been able to treat a wizarding condition as advanced as Lycanthropy.
- There are hints that she is deceased, for example, the fact that it was James was who financially helped Remus after Hogwarts, not his parents. This could also be explained by she and her husband having some sort of financial problem, even though both of these statements are mere speculations.
