The Hogwarts Carriages[1] transported Hogwarts students between Hogsmeade Station and Hogwarts Castle.[2][3][4]
Description[]
They were black in colour, with headlamps attached to the front. During inclement weather, hoods are attached to the top of the carriages, but in fair weather, the tops were left open. They were pulled by Thestrals, skeletal winged horses that only people who had seen death could see.[2][4]
However, they only transported second- to seventh-years, as the first-years traditionally travelled across the Black Lake by boat with Professor Hagrid.[5]
Behind the scenes[]
- In a deleted scene from the film adaptation of Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, several students are caught kissing in the carriages by Professor Snape during the night of the Yule Ball. In the book, this scene takes place in the rose garden.
- In the film adaptation of Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, a scene shows Hogwarts students being carried over the frozen Lake to Hogsmeade Station for the Christmas holidays on sleighs pulled by white horses instead of the Thestrals.
