The Hogwarts boats are traditionally used to transport the first year students, accompanied by Hogwarts gamekeeper Hagrid across Black Lake to the castle at the start of the school year. The boats only transport first years to the school, as second to seventh years travel in carriages. The boats move without the aid of paddles. During the Hogwarts graduation ceremony, the seventh-years ride the boats back across the lake as they leave the school for the last time.[1]

History

1994

During the start of term journey across the lake in 1994, Dennis Creevey fell out of his boat, but was rescued by the Giant Squid.

1995-1996

At the start of the 1995–1996 school year, the first years were accompanied across the lake by Professor Grubbly-Plank, as Hagrid had gone on a mission for Professor Dumbledore.

During the same school year, Fred and George Weasley and their friend Lee Jordan asked Harry Potter to assist them in hiding some packages of fireworks in the boats.
